WHERE

Northwood

What it’s like

Free park with a playground, ball court, tennis courts and cricket pitch, open from 9am and closing as late as 8pm in summer.

The playground is where you'll spend most of the visit. Beyond that there's a ball court for kicking a football about, tennis courts, a cricket pitch, an outdoor gym and a football stadium on site, so there's usually somewhere to point a restless eight-year-old at when the swings lose their shine. It's all outdoors, which means a wet day writes off the whole thing.

It's free to get in, which is the main reason to put it on the list. Nothing to book, no ticket, no turnstile. The trade-off is that the hours move about quite a bit through the year: 9am to 4pm in January, February, November and December, 9am to 5pm in March and October, 9am to 6pm in April, 9am to 7pm in September, and 9am to 8pm from May to August. If you're planning a late afternoon in the summer holidays you've got until 8, but a December after-school trip has a 4pm cut-off.

With no age range listed, the sensible read is that this suits anyone who can use a playground, roughly toddler up to ten or eleven. There's parking on site, which takes the edge off arriving with a boot full of scooters and a picnic. The allotment sits alongside it all too.

Nothing on site for food, so bring what you need.
