York
What it’s like
Weekly ballet, tap, street and contemporary classes working towards proper exams and a yearly stage show.
This is a proper dance school, not a drop-in session. Classes cover ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet, modern, tap, lyrical and contemporary, street dance and pointe work, plus yoga for dancers if you fancy something a bit calmer between the harder styles. Pupils work towards recognised dance examinations, so there's structure behind the routines rather than just turning up and freestyling.
The performance side is the bit that sticks with most dancers: an annual academy performance plus dance festivals through the year, which gives all that weekly practice somewhere to go. Pointe classes suggest there's a path here for dancers who want to push further rather than just fill an hour after school.
Getting there is straightforward if you're coming by train or bike. York Railway Station is a few minutes' walk with bus stops nearby, and there are bike racks at the main entrance for anyone cycling over. Parking's a bit more of a puzzle: there's limited free parking at the Gateway Centre and free parking at the nearby Morrisons, with separate Railway Institute parking for NDA students once vehicle details are registered at reception.
