What it’s like

Free Roman ruins to wander round in York Museum Gardens, with squirrels, birds and a picnic spot thrown in.

The Multangular Tower sits in York Museum Gardens and it's genuinely free to see, no ticket, no booking, just turn up between 9am and 6pm. It's the best surviving bit of Roman standing wall in the city, which sounds like a school trip fact but it's actually a fair reason to go, especially if your kids have just done the Romans at school and want to see one for real.

You can't climb on the ruins themselves, which is fair enough for something this old, but the gardens around it are the real draw for younger children. There's the Edible Wood and Artists' Gardens to explore, plus a decent chance of spotting squirrels, hedgehogs or foxes, and enough birds, moths and butterflies to keep a curious four-year-old busy without you having to plan anything.

There's no café or refreshment kiosk in the gardens, so it's a picnic-and-bring-your-own-snacks kind of visit if you're staying a while, and picnics are explicitly welcome on the grass. The one genuine faff is toilets: there are none in the gardens themselves.

Pathways are wheelchair friendly and buggies won't struggle either. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
