What it’s like
A pennine village theatre doing pantomime, family films and National Theatre Live screenings, with a youth theatre for teens on top.
This one's a proper village theatre, tucked in Delph on the edge of the Peak District, and the programme is a mixed bag in a good way. There's pantomime and family theatre on stage, concerts from Saddleworth Concerts Society, and film screenings that include National Theatre Live, so it's not just the panto season that's worth a look.
If you've got a teenager who fancies acting rather than watching, SPY Theatre runs weekly classes for 14 to 18 year olds on Monday evenings, 7.30 to 9pm, at a fiver a session paid termly. That's a proper commitment rather than a one-off treat, but it's cheap for tuition and a decent way to fill a Monday evening.
Getting there is easy enough by car, with free parking in the car park opposite and more on the road, which is one less thing to think about on a night out. There are buses from Oldham too if you'd rather not drive. Inside there's ramped access, a disabled toilet, a stair lift up to the bar and a hearing loop in the theatre, and there's a café on site for a drink or a bite before curtain up.
Booking online is free, but ring up and they'll sting you £2 for the privilege, so book online if you can. You can also subscribe to a season if you know you'll be back for more than one show.
