What it’s like

Weekly youth theatre sessions in Hyde where kids do drama, singing and games by age group, with a shot at the stage in real productions.

This is a youth theatre based at Studio 9, up at the top of Market Street, running through the school year rather than year round. Kids split by age: the 4 to 7s get a 45-minute session, 8 to 11s get an hour, and the teenagers get the longest slot at an hour and a half. It's drama, performance, singing and games rather than sit-down lessons, and the site says there's a waiting list on occasion, so if a session's popular you might not get straight in.

There's a proper payoff beyond the weekly session too. The group performs at public events and in society productions, which is a decent carrot for a kid who might otherwise moan about Tuesday drama club. On top of the regular Youth Theatre sessions there are one-off professional workshops, like an October Drama Workshop and an Irish Dancing Workshop, priced separately from the main sessions.

Cost is modest by kids' activity standards. A Youth Theatre session runs £4.50, though it's charged in half term blocks paid upfront rather than pay-as-you-go, so you're committing to a run rather than dropping in on a whim. The workshops sit a bit higher, £10 for the October Drama one and £8 for Irish Dancing.

It's not running over the school holidays, which catches some parents out if they're after summer or Christmas cover. There's a car park at the rear, which is one less thing to worry about if you're doing the after-school run straight from pickup.

How much does it cost?

Youth Theatre sessions are £4.50 each, but paid in half term blocks in advance rather than per session. Workshops are priced separately, £10 for the October Drama Workshop and £8 for the Irish Dancing Workshop.

What age is it for?

Sessions are split by school key stage, from 4 up to 18. The 4 to 7s meet for 45 minutes, 8 to 11s for an hour on Tuesdays, and the older teens get the longest session at an hour and a half.

Do we need to book ahead?

It's inclusive and open to anyone, but they sometimes run a waiting list so participants already in can focus on rehearsing for a show. Sessions are charged in advance in half term blocks rather than booked one at a time.

Does it run in the school holidays?

No, Youth Theatre sessions run during the school year and pause over school holiday periods.

Is there parking?

There's a car park at the rear of the building.
