What it’s like
Wander a huge old cathedral for free, with volunteer-led tours most days if you catch them on a quiet moment.
There's no ticket to buy here. Manchester Cathedral is open to walk round Monday to Saturday from 9:30am and Sundays from midday, and a suggested donation of £5 is about all they ask, contactless if you haven't got cash. Free guided tours run Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm, but the guides are volunteers so there's no guarantee one's free when you turn up. If you want to be sure of a proper look round, a private guided tour is £6 a head, runs about an hour, and needs booking for a weekday slot between 10:30am and 3pm.
It's a big, echoey, indoor space, which makes it a decent option when the rain's set in and you don't fancy paying for another soft play. There's no age guidance from the venue itself, so you'll know better than they do whether your lot can manage an hour of quiet wandering without touching everything. A four-year-old might get five minutes out of it before the fidgeting starts, an older child curious about old buildings and stained glass will get more.
One genuine faff: there are no visitor toilets inside the Cathedral itself. Nearest ones are in Marks and Spencer or the Arndale, about five minutes' walk, so factor that in before you commit to a long visit with a toddler mid-potty-training. If you're planning around a Wednesday evening, bell ringing practice runs 7pm to 9pm most weeks (not in August), and access can be a bit limited while things get set up for services generally.
It's easy to reach without a car. Manchester Victoria station and the Victoria and Exchange Square tram stops are all about five minutes' walk, and if you do drive, Q-Park Deansgate North does discounted parking if you book ahead. Wheelchair access is fine, and it's set up for group bookings if you're coming with more than just your own kids.
