What it’s like
Outdoor laser tag over 8 tag arenas and 12 paintball fields, with real tanks and helicopters to hide behind. Ages 7 and up.
Laser tag in a field, with missions built around real hardware. The site lists 8 dedicated laser tag arenas and 12 paintball arenas, over 20 playing fields in total and no two the same. Scenarios include rescuing a pilot from a crashed helicopter in a Black Hawk Down mission, taking on a futuristic fort, and disabling a real Russian 38 tonne battle tank. There are planes and helicopters parked on the playing areas too, which is the bit your kids will remember. Camouflage overalls and all the equipment come with it, so you only need to sort footwear.
The age rule is the thing to check first. Nobody under 7 plays, and that's laser tag for kids and adults alike. Sessions run 2 hours and the site reckons on 10 games in that time, with a typical visit lasting 2 to 3 hours once you add the safety brief and getting kitted up. Prices start at £25, which is party pricing, and adults are £29.99: this is a birthday party operation more than a drop-in afternoon out, so come as a group. A private party needs a minimum of 18 people, and you'll need 20 or more to get a private game.
It's an outdoor site in a field and they run it all weathers, so wellies or boots are the sensible call, and old trainers with good laces if it's dry. The entrance is through Crowthers Garden Centre and then 500m up a private road to the Mayhem car park, which is free. You come off the M25 at junction 29 for the A127 and A113, or the M11 at junction 5 near Loughton. There's a short cab ride from Debden on the Central line if you're not driving.
Food is sorted two ways: bring your own party food, or order Domino's pizza through the venue at £13.99 for a large Margarita, Pepperoni or veggie. The party room is free after every laser tag party, with complimentary tea and orange squash for the grown-ups. They're open all year, and there's a Halloween half term session on 31 October, 5 to 6:30pm, with zombies and mummies and 1.5 hours of spooky scenarios. Easter brings a Roblox FPS vs Fortnite event.
