BUGGY FRIENDLY

Yes

What it’s like

Free woodland walks above Dumbarton, from an easy buggy-friendly loop to a proper climb up Overtoun Glen.

There's a choice of routes here rather than one set walk. The lower paths are surfaced and flat enough for a buggy, which makes the 3.5km circular route to Round Wood Hill viewpoint the one to pick if you've got small legs or wheels in tow. Go up through Overtoun Glen instead and you're on a proper path to Black Linn Reservoir and the Kilpatrick Hills, with steep sections and some mud that rules out pushchairs and wheelchairs on that stretch.

Kids will remember the climb more than the flat bit, honestly. Scrambling up towards the reservoir with hills opening out around you beats a flat loop any day, even if it means carrying a tired four-year-old back down at the end.

It's free to get in and there's a free car park on site, so the only real cost is your time and maybe some clean shoes for the car. There are no toilets on site though, so factor in a stop in Dumbarton before you set off if anyone's likely to need one partway round.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Nothing. There's no entry charge and the car park on site is free too.

Is it OK for a buggy?

The lower paths are surfaced and fine for a pushchair. Overtoun Glen has steep sections and stairs, so leave the buggy in the car if you're heading that way.

Are there toilets?

None on site. The nearest public toilets are in Dumbarton, so go before you arrive.

Which route should we do with young kids?

The 3.5km circular route to Round Wood Hill viewpoint is the gentler option. Overtoun Glen up to Black Linn Reservoir is steeper and better suited to older kids who can manage a proper climb.
