Hippodrome Theatre
WHERE
Todmorden
What it’s like
A proper old theatre in town that puts on family shows, with doors opening half an hour before curtain up.
This is a working theatre, not a soft play or a farm, so the day out here is about getting dressed up a bit and sitting down for a show. Doors open thirty minutes before the performance starts, which doesn't give you long to faff about once you're in, so it's worth turning up promptly rather than cutting it fine.
Getting a wheelchair in is straightforward as far as the Stalls goes, with a ramp at the entrance and level access through to the Foyer, and there are four wheelchair spaces in the Main House plus two more for Foyer Productions. The Circle is a different story though, it's two staircases up with stepped rows, so if anyone in your group can't manage stairs you'll want seats downstairs. The bar and kiosks are open before the show for snacks and drinks, but they shut once the performance starts, so grab what you need beforehand.
Parking is the one to sort out ahead of time. There are free bays on the road right outside, and the town centre car parks are pay and display but free after 6pm, which suits an evening show nicely. Do not be tempted by the large car park opposite, over by the Calderdale NHS building, it's privately owned and parking there is banned even outside surgery hours, fines and all.
If you're coming by train, Todmorden station is a five minute walk, and there are local buses in from Halifax, Burnley and Rochdale too.

Plan your visit
What time should we arrive?
Doors open 30 minutes before the show starts for most performances.
How do we book tickets?
Online, by phone (9am to 7pm weekdays, 9am to 5pm Saturday), in person at Todmorden Information Centre, or at the theatre itself on the night.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
The Stalls and Foyer are, with a ramp at the entrance and four wheelchair spaces in the Main House. The Circle has no wheelchair access, just two staircases with stepped rows.
Can we get food and drink there?
The bar and kiosks do drinks, snacks and sweets, but they close once the performance begins.
Where do we park?
Free road bays right outside, or the town centre car parks which are free after 6pm. Do not use the large car park opposite the theatre near the NHS building, it's private and you risk a fine.
Can we bring a guide dog?
Yes, and there's a dog-sitting service if you let them know in advance, plus water bowls on site. Front row Stalls or aisle seats on the right are recommended if you want your dog with you during the show.
