What it’s like

Feed the animals, tear round a straw maze and a giant indoor sandpit, then hop on Farmer Chris's tractor and trailer.

This is a proper hands-on farm day rather than a look-but-don't-touch one. Kids get stuck into feeding and stroking animals, brushing pigs, holding guinea pigs and chicks, and depending on the season there's calf feeding or goat and lamb feeding on offer too. There's egg collecting and incubators with hatching eggs, which is the sort of thing that'll get talked about at teatime for weeks.

Outside there's a spider web climbing structure, a wooden agility course, a double zip wire and a rope swing for the ones who want to burn through their energy properly, plus pedal tractors and go-karts for the smaller legs. The straw maze and giant indoor sandpit are the ones to save for when the weather turns, since Hesketh Farm Park has a genuinely huge undercover area covering the animal handling barns, the sandpit, pedal tractors and the maze itself. The tractor and trailer ride with Farmer Chris is worth timing your visit around, though it's cash only, which feels a bit odd when everything else in the shop and café takes card.

It's £8.50 for adults and children alike, with under 2s at £4 and under 1s just £1, so a family of four is looking at a fair chunk of change for the day. Gates open at 10am and last entry is 4pm, with the site shutting at 5pm, giving you a proper full day if you want it. There's a small café doing hot and cold drinks, home baking, sandwiches and ice creams, or you can bring your own picnic and eat it at the tables inside or out. Every child under 14 needs an adult with them at all times, so this isn't a drop-and-run kind of visit.

Parking is free and there's a disabled bay right by the entrance, with most of the farm, including the tractor ride, accessible by wheelchair. Dogs have to stay in the car, or rather they don't, because the farm is firm that only assistance dogs come in and pets should never be left in vehicles.
