What it’s like

A genuine Cold War nuclear bunker 40ft underground, packed with authentic equipment and a spy mouse trail for the kids to follow.

Forty feet down and six and a half foot of wall between you and the outside world, this was a real government bunker until 1993, and almost everything inside is the actual kit left behind or since collected by the founder. Kids get a Soviet Spy Mouse Trail to follow through the labyrinth of rooms, while the rest of you can pick through Cold War equipment that still works, including generators on standby to this day. There's a free audio tour if you'd rather listen than read every panel.

Two floors are open (the mezzanine's still in use, so that stays shut), and you're looking at an hour and a half to two hours to do it properly. It's not cheap for what's essentially a self-guided wander round old rooms: £17.50 for an adult, £11.50 for a child, or £48 for a family of four. The saving grace is that every ticket is an annual pass, so if the kids get obsessed with the place you can go back free for the rest of the year.

There's no lift, only a ramp up to the top level, so if you're pushing a buggy or managing a wheelchair you'll want to know that before you commit to the full labyrinth. The location is genuinely out of the way too, which is part of the appeal if you like that sort of abandoned-bunker atmosphere, but it does mean a proper drive rather than a quick pop-in.

It's shut on Mondays and Tuesdays outside bank holidays and school holidays, and last entry is 3pm, so this isn't a spontaneous late-afternoon plan. There's a café and gift shop on site, and they do school visits and group bookings if you fancy making a bigger trip of it.
