What it’s like
Free woodland with a toddler trail, downhill mountain bike runs and a bridleway loop for horse riders and cyclists.
This is proper woods, not a manicured park, so what you do here depends on what you've brought with you. Footpaths and bridleways criss-cross the site, there's a Toddler Trail for the smallest legs, and three downhill mountain bike trails including one called Steel City for anyone who wants more of a thrill than a gentle stroll offers. Horse riders get a 3km bridleway loop, and cyclists can pick up the Trans Pennine Trail from here too.
The changing seasons do a lot of the work. Bluebells and honeysuckle turn up in spring alongside common cow-wheat, which is the kind of detail that makes a walk feel like more than just a walk if you're trying to get a child interested in what's under their feet. Summer brings blackberries and bilberries worth picking, autumn brings fungi, and birdwatchers apparently have something to look at whatever time of year you turn up.
It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to slot into a weekend without much planning. Dogs are welcome but need to be kept under close control and in sight, so it's not a place to let them range off on their own.
Worth knowing before you head over for autumn 2026: there's machinery on site and trail closures running from 7 September to the end of October that year, and the Pub Run trail specifically is shut during the works. If you're planning a trip around then, it's worth building in a plan B route.

Plan your visit
Is it free to visit?
Yes, there's no entry charge for Greno Woods.
Is there a trail for younger children?
There's a Toddler Trail alongside the main footpaths and bridleways, so smaller legs aren't stuck doing the full mountain bike loop.
Can we take dogs?
Dogs are allowed but they need to be kept under close control and in sight at all times.
Are all the trails open at the moment?
Not always. There's machinery on site and closures running from 7 September to the end of October 2026, and the Pub Run trail is shut for that stretch.
