What it’s like

Miles of flat sand for walking, kite flying and windsurfing, with dogs allowed off the lead all along the beach.

This is a stretch out beach rather than a build a sandcastle by the ice cream van beach. The sand runs on for miles and stays flat, so it's good for a proper walk, letting the kids get ahead of you, or getting a kite up without fuss. If anyone in your group windsurfs, this is where they'll want to head, and there's enough space that it doesn't feel like you're all on top of each other.

There's no ice cream hut or café mentioned here. Pack a flask and something to eat if you're staying a few hours, because once you're out on that sand you won't want to trek back to the car for snacks.

Parking is pay on arrival and tiered by time: £1.50 for up to an hour, £4 for up to three, £6 for the full day. That's fair if you're popping down for a quick walk, but it adds up if you're settling in for the whole afternoon, so decide before you park how long you're actually staying. Motorhomes pay £6 for a full day too. Gates are open from 7am, closing around 7:30pm in summer and 6pm in winter.

Dogs are allowed with no restrictions, which is rare enough on beaches that it's worth mentioning twice. If you've got a dog that likes to properly run, this is the beach for that, not the one where you're constantly checking a sign about lead-only zones.
