What it’s like

A record store, café and bar rolled into one, with a jukebox to play, vinyl to flick through and live music some nights.

Part café, part record shop, part music venue. You can flick through the vinyl racks for new and used classics, feed the jukebox for a free play, or just sit with a grilled cheese sandwich and a locally roasted coffee while someone else picks the soundtrack. There's a full bar too, so it edges from daytime café into evening venue depending on when you turn up.

It's open every day from 10am to 5pm, and entry is free. The evenings are where it changes character: on Live Music Nights the café actually closes between 5pm and 7pm before reopening for the show, and once the music starts the room asks for quiet, which is fair enough for the artist but worth knowing if you've got a toddler who narrates everything.

There's no age range given for this one. Dogs are welcome, which says something about the general mood of the place, and there are party rooms if you want to book it out for something bigger, from a birthday to a wedding.

If you're thinking about hiring the space, private events come with a full bar and a finger buffet from £90 plus VAT, which for a city centre venue in York isn't a bad shout for a party.
