What it’s like
A boardgame and card game hangout with hundreds of titles to try, plus demo nights for Magic, Yugioh and Pokemon.
This one's for the kid who already knows the difference between a d20 and a d12. The library runs to hundreds of boardgames you can just sit down and play, and if your child's into trading card games there's demo activity for Magic, Yugioh and Pokemon on organised play nights. There are also Learn to Play sessions for roleplay games, usually an hour long, aimed at getting the basics down before you're thrown into a full campaign.
It's open late most days, 11am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and till 6pm on Sundays, so there's no rush to squeeze it into a morning. Worth knowing there's a monthly session run with A Spectrum of Possibilities for autism support, which is a nice touch if that's useful for your family.
The site mentions an award-winning café on site. Parking nearby costs, which stings a bit if you're already paying for tickets to a session, but it's an easy walk from both Piccadilly and Victoria stations if you're coming in by train.
One faff to flag: weekly events don't get refunded if you cancel, though they'll try to move your ticket to the following week. Leave it any later than 24 hours before the event and that option disappears too, so don't book on a whim if your evenings are unpredictable.
