What it’s like
Free museum with an Egyptian LEGO trail, a Cleopatra exhibition and a Friday session just for under-5s.
Getting in costs nothing, which makes this an easy one to slot into a wet Tuesday without feeling like you have to make a day of it to get your money's worth. The big draw at the moment is the Cleopatra and the Queens of Egypt exhibition, running from March 2026 through to February 2027, so there's no rush to catch it. Alongside it is the Mummies in the Museum Trail, where kids hunt for Egyptian LEGO figures through the displays, a decent trick for getting a seven-year-old to actually stop and look rather than march past everything.
If you've got a toddler, Friday mornings in term time are the ones to know. Teeny Time Travellers is built for under-5s, with stories, songs and crafts, and it's a gentler pace than pushing a buggy round the main galleries. The wider museum collection covers Barnsley's own history too, going back thousands of years, more than anyone's expecting to get through in one visit.
Opening hours are on the short side, 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 3.30pm on Saturday, so treat it as a two or three hour stop rather than a full day out. There's no booking, you just turn up. Wheelchairs are free to borrow and the building is step-free throughout, with a Changing Places facility on the ground floor, though you'll need a RADAR key from Town Hall reception or the gift shop to use it, and it's closed on Sundays when the Town Hall itself is shut. The café on site does breakfast, lunch, brunch and cakes if you need to break up the visit.
Parking in the town centre car parks is free, with up to three hours free at weekends, and the bus interchange is about 0.3 miles away, though it's an uphill walk from there to the museum. There are also relaxed opening dates through the year for a quieter visit, handy if busy galleries aren't your thing.
