What it’s like

A locked room, a 60-minute clock, and a team of clue-hunters aged 8 and up trying not to panic.

You get shut in a themed room with your team and an hour on the clock to find and solve enough clues to get out. It's built for 8 and up, and anyone under 16 needs a paying adult with them, so this is one for the older end rather than a family with a toddler in tow. There's also City Hunt, an outdoor puzzle trail round Watford if you fancy swapping four walls for the street.

The pricing drops the more of you there are, which is worth knowing before you commit to a headcount. Two players pay £36 each, but get to six and it's down to £26 a head, so a bigger group makes far more sense than a couple sneaking off for a date. Whichever room you pick, the whole visit runs about 90 minutes: 15 minutes of waivers and briefing before you go in, 60 minutes solving the puzzles, then time in the lounge afterwards to relive it over a drink. Turn up late and you'll eat into your own prep time, so don't dawdle on the way from the car park.

City Hunt takes longer, around 1.5 to 2 hours, and it's weather dependent. They'll hand out ponchos for normal rain, but severe wind or a weather warning can see it cancelled, with your booking rescheduled or swapped for an indoor room rather than refunded. Card only here, no cash, which catches a few people out.

For a birthday, packages run from £24 to £37 a head and cover an escape room, welcome and celebration drinks, and a game host. Book for a party of 10 or more and the birthday child gets in free. Parking's easy enough, with four car parks at the Harlequin shopping centre and the Queens Road entrance the closest, and if you're coming by train it's a three-minute walk from Watford High Street station.

Rooms are rated 8 and up, for groups of up to six. Anyone under 16 has to have a paying adult with them in the room.

How much does it cost?

It runs from £36 a head for two players down to £26 a head for six, so the bigger the group the cheaper it gets per person.

How long does a visit take?

About 90 minutes all in: 15 minutes of prep and briefing, 60 minutes locked in the room, then a bit of lounge time after. City Hunt outdoors takes longer, around 1.5 to 2 hours.

Do we need to book?

Yes, booking's required. Give 24 hours notice and you can reschedule within 30 days at no charge.

Is there parking nearby?

What happens if it rains during City Hunt?

Normal rain just gets you a poncho and the game carries on. Severe wind or a weather warning can mean cancellation, though they'll reschedule you or move you indoors rather than refund.

Can we pay in cash?

Card only across the venue, no cash accepted, so leave the coins at home.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Many of the games are designed for up to two wheelchair users, and a registered carer gets in free when supporting a player.

What's included in a birthday party?

Packages from £24 to £37 a head include the escape room, welcome and celebration drinks, and a game host. Book 10 or more and the birthday child goes free.
