What it’s like

Kids watch working sculptors, join drop-in family workshops in the outdoor studio, then eat at a toy-stocked cafe.

This is a working sculpture studio rather than a paint-a-plate cafe, so what your kids actually get is a look at real artists in the courtyard and studios, plus their own go at making something in the outdoor learning studio. There are drop-in family workshops alongside proper sculpture courses, so you can turn up for something loose and hands-on rather than book a whole course.

Reception and the workshops run Tuesday to Friday, 9.30 to 5, which rules out a spontaneous Saturday visit unless you're just there for the cafe. That's Cafe MILK, open every day and staying open later Friday to Sunday, and it's kid friendly enough to have toys and books on hand along with a small kids menu and a half portion option. Dogs are welcome in there too, which is a nice touch if your family walk comes with a dog attached.

One thing to flag: the workshops get loud. The site's upfront that noise levels are high and ear protection is available, so if you've got a toddler who hates sudden bangs, that's worth thinking about before you go in. The cafe itself can get noisy when it's busy as well.

Getting there and getting around is easy. Level access runs right through the building with a lift between floors, there's free parking on site and Blue Badge parking too, and it sits a few minutes from a tram terminal on Hawthornvale with buses and the Newhaven cycle path nearby. Entry itself is free, so your spend for the day is really just whatever you eat.
