What it’s like
A three-hour walking tour through Edinburgh's history and architecture, with under-12s going free.
This is a proper walking tour, not a quick loop round the castle gates. You're out for three hours with a guide talking through the history, the architecture and the stories behind the streets, which is a decent chunk of a day for anyone under about eight but fine once you've got a kid who can walk and listen at the same time.
The pricing is worth knowing before you book. Adults are £34, teenagers 12 to 17 are £25.50, and children 11 and under go free, so a family of four with two younger kids is really only paying for the grown-ups. If you'd rather not tag along with a group of strangers, there's a private tour option too, priced per group rather than per head, which works out sensible if there are a few of you and you want the guide's attention on your own questions rather than sharing it with twenty other people.
Booking is required, there's no just turning up on the day. The one bit of flexibility is the cancellation policy, free up to 24 hours before, so if the weather turns properly grim or someone's poorly the morning of, you're not out of pocket.
