What it’s like

A guided ghost walk through Edinburgh's Old Town and down into the underground vaults, aimed at kids five and up who like a proper scare.

This is a walking tour with a guide, taking you through the Old Town and then down into the underground vaults for the ghost stories bit. There's a spanish-language version too if that's useful for your group. Five is the stated minimum age, and that feels about right, there's a fair bit of walking and standing about in the dark listening to stories, which won't hold a younger one's attention.

The vaults are the bit that'll stick in a kid's memory, but they come with a catch: you get down there via spiral stairs only, so if you've got a buggy or anyone who can't manage stairs, this one's out. The final chamber underground has uneven cobblestones underfoot too, worth knowing if you're wrangling a five-year-old who likes to run ahead.

Prices run from £16 for the Old Town and Underground Ghost Tour up to £21 for the Extreme Paranormal one, so decide how spooky you actually want it before you book. There's a Historical version at £20 if ghost stories aren't really your thing but you still fancy the vaults. Tours run every day from noon until 9pm, and a private group tour is £250 if you want the whole thing to yourselves.
