Darwin Forest

Matlock
What it’s like
A lodge holiday base in the forest near Matlock, with a restaurant, café and indoor and outdoor play to fill the gaps between walks.
This is a lodge break rather than a day trip, so the whole point is settling in for a few nights and letting the woodland do the work. There's indoor play and outdoor play on site, so you're not relying entirely on the weather holding, and reception is open long hours (8.30am to 8pm) if you roll in late or need anything sorted before the next day out.
Food is split between two options. Foresters bar and restaurant does a proper menu built on locally sourced ingredients, while Explorers café is the quicker stop for coffee and something lighter. Staff say they take allergies seriously and will talk you through the menu, though they're upfront that they can't promise a completely allergen-free room given how many guests pass through.
Booking is where it gets a bit fiddly. There's no one-night stay and even a two-night break is last-minute only and has to go through reception by phone rather than online. Deposits depend on timing too: 20% down if you book more than 10 weeks out, or a smaller 10% if you use the monthly instalment plan more than 14 weeks before arrival. Cancellation terms shift depending on which plan you pick.
Accessibility has clearly had some thought put in. There are two and three bedroom accessible lodges with ramps and wet rooms, plus hire options for a high-back chair, a shower chair and mobility rails, each on a refundable deposit. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout, and there are pet-friendly lodges too if you're bringing the family dog along rather than just a working one.

Two nights, and only if it comes up last minute, booked by calling reception directly. One-night stays aren't offered at all.
How much deposit do we need to put down?
Standard terms are a 20% deposit if you book more than 10 weeks before arrival. Book further out through the monthly instalment plan and it drops to 10%, with the balance due 6 weeks before you arrive.
Can we bring our dog?
Assistance dogs are welcome in every lodge type and facility, and there are separate pet-friendly dog lodges if you're bringing a family pet.
Is it accessible for a wheelchair user?
There are two and three bedroom accessible lodges with ramp access and accessible wet rooms. You can also hire a high-back chair, a shower chair or mobility rails, each with a small refundable deposit.
What if we need to cancel?
Under the standard terms, cancelling more than 70 days out means losing your 20% deposit rather than the whole cost. There are also a Flexible Holiday Plan and a Cancellation Guarantee Plan with different terms if you'd rather build in more flexibility.
What's there to eat on site?
Foresters bar and restaurant does a full menu using locally sourced ingredients, and Explorers café covers coffee and lighter bites for a quicker stop.
