What it’s like
A castle museum with parkland to explore, a model railway tearoom and free entry for under-16s.
Kids under 16 get in free here, which softens the blow of the £3.50 adult ticket straight away. Once you're in there's the museum and art gallery to wander round, family trails to follow if you want a bit of structure to the visit, and a children's play area out in the parkland for when they've had enough of looking at things behind glass. There's also a model railway with its own tearoom, which is a nice change of pace and probably the bit they'll ask to go back for.
It's a proper historic building rather than a purpose-built attraction, so not every corner is easy to get round. Access to all the galleries is possible and there's a wheelchair available on site plus a staff-operated lift to the basement, but the site is upfront that some areas aren't independently accessible given the age of the place. Worth knowing too that anyone under 16 needs an adult with them, so this isn't one for teenagers to explore alone while you sit in the tearoom.
Julie's Castle Tearoom runs from 10am to 4pm daily out in the park, with outdoor seating, separate from the main café listed for the castle itself. Parking's free on site with Blue Badge spaces on the forecourt and the main car park round behind the castle near the Bothy. If you're coming from town it's about a 20 minute walk, or there's a regular Stagecoach bus if little legs aren't up for that.
Last entry is 4pm in the winter months and 4.15pm from April to September, so don't leave it too late in the day. Mondays are closed from October to March along with bank holidays in that period, which catches people out if they're planning a spontaneous half-term trip.
