What it’s like
Pick a mug, a plate or a money box and paint it up with ceramic paints, ready to collect a few weeks later.
You turn up, choose a piece of pottery, whether that's a cup, a plate, a money box or a jewellery box, and get stuck into painting it with ceramic paints and tools. It's a sit-down, take-your-time sort of activity rather than anything that'll tire anyone out, which suits kids from about five who can handle a paintbrush without eating the paint.
Birthday parties are clearly the big thing here. You can go for a themed party (monster, dinosaur, animal or fairy) for up to 12 kids under 12, running 1.5 to 2 hours with food included, and it's been running since 2003 so they've had plenty of practice at wrangling a room full of five-year-olds with paintbrushes. Two adults max are allowed in with the party, which is worth knowing if grandparents want to come along too.
The catch is timing on changes. If your plans shift, you need to give 28 days notice or they can't reschedule you, and the deposit and studio fees don't come back either way. Once the painting's done, nobody's taking it home that day. It gets glazed and fired, and you're waiting 2-3 weeks to collect it, or they'll post it if you're not local, so the excitement of finishing your masterpiece comes with a bit of a wait before you actually get to use it.
There's a café on site, free parking at New Oriel Hall in the village centre, and on-street parking too if that's full. Term time it's Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and it opens up Monday to Saturday in the school holidays, plus evening slots from 6 to 8pm if you fancy a quieter session.
