What it’s like
An old-school independent cinema screening films, with under-14 tickets a fair bit cheaper than adult ones.
This is a proper old cinema rather than a multiplex, so don't expect the works, but the ticket prices are the kind that make you actually want to go more than once a year. Under-14s get in for £6.50 before 5pm, rising to £7.50 for evening showings, and that's the same rate as students and pensioners get, which feels like a decent deal for a family screening on a Saturday afternoon.
Book online or by phone and they add 50p a ticket for the privilege, which is a bit of a cheek but not enough to put you off if it means securing seats for a popular film. If you fancy the Pullman seats it's £9 a head, and there are occasional Event Cinema screenings at £15 with standard seating, so those are worth budgeting for separately if that's what you're after.
Parking is the real catch here. Cottage Road itself only allows four hours on-street, so if you're planning a big day out around the film rather than a quick in-and-out, park on Moor Road instead where it's unrestricted. One thing that matters a lot for some families: there's no wheelchair access and no disabled toilets, down to the age and layout of the building, so it's not going to work if anyone in your group needs step-free access.
Younger kids watching a 12 or 12a might get asked for proof of age at the door.

Plan your visit
How much are child tickets?
£6.50 for under-14s before 5pm, £7.50 after 5pm.
Do we need to book ahead?
There's no mention of booking being essential, but online and phone bookings do carry a 50p per ticket fee.
Is there parking nearby?
Cottage Road has on-street parking but it's limited to four hours. Moor Road is unrestricted, so that's the better bet for a longer visit.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
No. There's no wheelchair access or disabled toilets because of the age and layout of the building.
Will my child need ID for a 12A film?
Proof of age can be asked for on 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films, so it's handy to have something on hand if there's any doubt.
