What it’s like
Free woodland walking with sunny glades, boggy dips, ancient rocks and fungi to spot along the way.
This is mixed woodland rather than a set-up attraction, which is exactly the appeal if you want a few hours outdoors without paying for the privilege. The site describes open sunny glades alongside shaded boggy patches, so you get proper variety on one walk rather than the same trees on repeat. Bring wellies for the boggy bits and you're sorted.
The wildlife spotting is the bit that'll keep kids moving. Over 60 bird species are listed, along with dormice and other fauna, plus wildflowers, ferns, mosses and what the site calls spectacular fungi. It's the sort of walk where you end up crouching down every five minutes to look at something, which is no bad thing.
There's a geological angle too: the rocks here go back 300 million years, and the site makes a point of it. That's a nice thread to pull on with older kids who like a "why" attached to what they're looking at, even if a toddler will just want to poke the fungi instead.
Entry's free and there's parking on site, which makes this an easy one to add to a weekend without much planning. Just don't expect facilities beyond that, so sort snacks and layers before you set off.
