What it’s like

Thirty auto-belay climbing lines and a Vertical Drop slide, with a strict hour in the arena once the harness goes on.

Thirty different climbing lines, all on automatic belay, so there's no partner needed to hold a rope for you. The younger end get a Mini Mountaineer rate from age 2, older kids and adults pay the same £17 (or £13.50 off-peak, and that gap is worth chasing if your diary's flexible). The Vertical Drop slide is a £4 add-on and sounds like the bit to save until they've worked out which walls they're actually good at.

A session is an hour of climbing bookended by a 15-minute harness fit and briefing and a 5-minute debrief, so budget closer to 75 minutes all in. They want you there 10 minutes before your slot, and it's a timed booking online, no turning up on spec. Open-toed shoes and boots are out in the arena, and long hair needs tying back, which is one more thing to remember on the way out the door.

If you've got a non-climbing toddler or a baby in tow, they can watch from the viewing platform with you rather than sit it out in the car. There's a café on site, lockers at reception for coats and bags, and wheelchair access to the ground floor. Parking's plentiful but capped at three hours by Parking Eye, so don't dawdle over the coffee afterwards if you're not walking or on the bus from Garforth station.

Parties start at £260 for a minimum of ten, or a cheaper £156 for six on weekdays in term time, and both include the climb, the slide, a party room and food. The birthday child gets a free go on the Vertical Drop and a gift card for a return visit, a nice touch for the price you're paying.

Yes, it's a timed session booked online, and they say it only takes a couple of minutes to sort.
