What it’s like

Pottery painting and pottery wheel sessions for a birthday party, with the studio kept quiet by only letting two or three adults stay.

You book a slot, your child picks from the party range of pottery to paint or has a go on the wheel, and there's a play kitchen and chalk board to keep smaller siblings busy if they tag along. Parties run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4 to 5.15pm, and packages start at £120 for up to six children painting, or £270 if you want the pottery wheel and mug painting combined.

The studio only has room for two or three adults to stay during a party, so this tends to work out as just the birthday child's parents watching while everyone else drops off and comes back. Food isn't included as standard, but you can add party bags at £4 a head or a food package at £5 a head, both needing at least two weeks' notice.

One thing to plan for: whatever your child paints and glazes does not come home that day. It takes two to four months for the drying and firing, so factor in a second trip or a wait for the post. The old café side of things has gone too; afternoon tea is now pre-order only, £17 a head with a minimum of six people and seven days' notice, so it is not a casual drop-in for a cuppa.

Deposits are not refundable if you need to cancel, though they will move your date or give you vouchers valid for six months. Ages are flexible in practice, they say the parties suit most school age children and are happy to chat if you are not sure your child fits.
