Cat In The Wall
WHERE
York
What it’s like
A grazing-board bar for a relaxed afternoon coffee or evening drink in York, not a stop for a family day out.
This is a bar built for sitting and talking, not for entertaining children. There's no hot kitchen, so what you get is cold: a cheese board, a charcuterie board, nibbles, and coffee and cakes that the venue itself rates highly. That works nicely for a slow afternoon coffee or a drink before dinner in town, but it's not somewhere to plan a proper meal around, and there's nothing here aimed at kids.
Opening hours flex through the week, starting at 3pm Monday to Thursday, 2pm on Fridays and noon at weekends, all running through to midnight (alcohol stops at 11.30pm). Being independent, they're upfront that they might open a bit later than advertised if there's been a maintenance job or a party the night before to clear up.
If you want a table on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday night, you can't book one. Those nights are walk-in only. Any other night, you email them or message on social media, and they'll take reservations up to eight guests. Dogs are welcome day to day as long as they stay off the seating and out of the staff's way, though they can't be accommodated at private parties, which the venue also hosts.
Treat this as an adult spot for a catch-up over a board and a coffee, not a family outing.

Plan your visit
Is this suitable for children?
There's nothing here geared towards kids, no hot food and no children's activities, so it reads as an adult hangout rather than a family stop.
What food is there?
No hot kitchen, just ambient or chilled options: a cheese board, a charcuterie board, nibbles, and coffee and cakes.
Can I book a table?
Not on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday nights, those are walk-in only. Any other night, email them or message their socials, up to eight guests.
What time does it close?
Midnight, though the bar stops serving alcohol at 11.30pm. It can open later than the stated time if there's been a maintenance issue or a party the night before.
Are dogs allowed?
As long as they stay off the seating and don't get in the way of staff or walkways. They're not allowed at private parties though.
