CakeCo - Harrow

What it’s like

Birthday cakes, photo cakes and an eggless range, all baked to order for collection or delivery.

This is a cake bakery rather than a day out, so the thing you're actually doing is ordering. Children's birthday cakes, photo cakes with a picture printed on top, and a Milk Cakes range sit alongside the plain celebration sponges. The eggless option is the bit worth knowing about: they've been baking egg and eggless cakes side by side for over 25 years, which is a long time to have got a recipe right, and it means a child with an egg allergy isn't stuck with the sad corner of the table.

The catch is that cakes are made to order. You can't nip in and grab one off a shelf on the way to a party, and the site pushes you towards ordering and delivery online. So this is one to sort a few days ahead rather than on the morning of. If your child has decided on a photo cake two hours before the party, that's not going to happen.

Ordering online gets you a tracking number by email, so you can see where the cake is rather than hovering by the door. There's a store locator on the site if you want to find the Harrow shop, and birthday parties are listed among what they do, which is worth asking about if you'd rather someone else handled the cake side of the day.
