What it’s like

A guided tour round Bywell Hall's art and furniture collection, with a fifteenth-century tower to gawp at on the way.

A guided tour is the whole visit here. You're taken round Bywell Hall itself, looking at the family's art and furniture rather than wandering off to find a gift shop or a play area, so it suits someone who actually wants to hear the history rather than tick off a day out. Given there's a tower on site dating back centuries, it's worth asking your guide about it while you're there rather than assuming you'll spot a leaflet on it afterwards.

It's open daily, 9am to 5pm, which gives you a reasonable window to fit a visit round a train or a drive up the A69. Getting there is easy enough without a car too, since it's walking distance from Stocksfield train station on the Newcastle to Carlisle line, and it's only 20 minutes from Newcastle International Airport if you're combining it with something else.

There isn't much else pinned down about the visit itself beyond the tour, so this reads more as a history stop than a full day out. If your children are younger and need things to touch and climb on, a guided tour of a furniture collection is going to test their patience fairly quickly. Older children with an interest in history or architecture will get more out of the hour than a toddler will.
