What it’s like
A moated castle with gardens and parkland to wander, open just three afternoons a week from April to September.
This is a proper moated castle, the kind with a gatehouse and a bridge over water, and the walk from the car park to the front door is part of the day rather than a chore (300 paces, they reckon, so leave the buggy behind if you can). Inside there's the house itself to look round, and outside the gardens and parkland give kids somewhere to stretch their legs without anyone telling them to be quiet.
The catch is the opening hours. It only opens Wednesdays, Sundays and bank holiday Mondays, April to September, 2pm to 5pm with last entry at 4:30. That's a narrow window to plan around, and there's no advance booking, so you turn up and buy at the Gatehouse on the day, cash or card. If you fancy just the gardens without the house, that's £8, same as a child's ticket for the full visit, and adults are £13.
The Tea Room opens a bit earlier, from 1:30pm, and you can go in for a cup of tea and a look at the grounds without a ticket for the castle itself. Parking's free for paying visitors, dogs are welcome on leads in the park and gardens, and there's an accessible toilet, though all the toilets are in the car park rather than near the castle or moated area, worth factoring in if you've got a small one who needs the loo mid-visit.
Historic Houses members get in free with proof of membership, which is worth remembering if you're already a cardholder. For anyone wanting a private tour or an event, it's email rather than a phone call to sort out.
