WHERE

Brighton

What it’s like

A caravan and motorhome site a few miles from Brighton beach, with a playground on site and pre-mapped walks to follow straight from the pitch.

You pitch up, and the kids have got a playground on site before you've even finished levelling the caravan. The beach is within five miles, so it's a short trip rather than a walk, but the Outdooractive app has free pre-mapped walks and hikes loaded up if you fancy exploring on foot instead of packing everyone into the car again.

Stay length is flexible, though there's a four-night minimum if you want the promotional discount, which is worth knowing before you book a quick weekend. Under-5s stay free and so do dogs, which takes the sting out of a family trip with a dog in tow. Chef Philippe's outlet at the entrance does coffee and breakfast, plus pizza and pasta in the evening, with outdoor seating.

Membership of the Caravan and Motorhome Club costs £69 a year and covers a partner and any children under 18, with a £10 joining fee unless you pay by direct debit. You don't have to join to stay, though: non-members can book selected campsites online, they just pay a £15 per night supplement on arrival, and there's no such supplement on tent pitches booked online. If you're going to do this more than once a year, the membership fee pays for itself fast.

Buses run regularly from the site, and the old Volks Railway trundles along the seafront promenade if you want the novelty option for getting into town.
