What it’s like
Free wander round herbaceous borders, a rock garden with a pool, a mini Roman temple and a patch of woodland to get lost in.
There's no ticket to buy here, which makes it an easy one to add to a day in Bath without a plan falling apart if the kids only last twenty minutes. You wander through botanical borders and flower beds, then hit the rock garden with its pool, which is the bit most kids will remember and try to climb on regardless of what the sign says. There's a replica Roman temple tucked in too, which is a nice surprise if you've had enough of the real Roman stuff in town already.
The woodland garden is the part worth saving for last. It's shadier, a bit wilder feeling, and gives you somewhere to slow down after the more manicured borders near the entrance. Paths are tarmac throughout, so a buggy or a wheelchair goes round without any drama, and that's not always true of gardens this old.
Parking on the road nearby is pay and display but free for the first hour, which is generous if you're only popping in. If you want longer, Charlotte Street Car Park is a 600 metre walk. The bus station and the Newbridge Park and Ride both drop you within 250 metres too, so you don't need a car at all if you'd rather not bother with Bath traffic.
