What it’s like

A working organic garden with meadows, a sculpture trail and a children's garden running two-hour gardening and art sessions.

Wandering here means meadow, birch grove, a vegetable patch you can actually see growing, and a sculpture garden dotted along the way. Kids get their own patch too, the Skool Beanz Children's Garden, where two-hour sessions mix gardening with art activities. It's outdoor and unhurried rather than an adventure playground, so it suits a family who fancy pottering rather than one chasing a big slide.

Entry is £8 on the gate and you don't need to book ahead for a general visit, which is one less thing to organise on a Saturday morning. If you know you'll be back more than once, the season ticket is worth doing the maths on: £36 for an adult, £10 for a child, or £75 for a family of four, covering unlimited visits from April through October. Workshops run separately at £20 a head, dropping to £10 if you're an RHS, SA or OG member, and those do need booking in advance.

It's only open Thursday to Saturday during the season, which runs 9th April to 31st October, so this isn't a spontaneous Sunday plan. The Cakehole café is on site for food and drinks, and there's free parking, which takes the sting out of the entry price a bit. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can get to the café fine, but the garden itself has a lot of gravel and grass underfoot.

If you can time it right, the Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival runs Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th September, and the Farm to Fridge days add a behind-the-scenes farm tour to the usual garden wander for £70. A visit here stretches easily into a half-day, longer if you stop for the workshop or linger over the sculpture trail.
