What it’s like

Guided walks through limestone gorges, ancient woodland and hidden caves across the Mendip Hills.

This is walking country, and the guided routes do the heavy lifting on picking somewhere good. Ebbor Gorge is the one to save for last if you've got a choice, dramatic limestone cliffs, ancient woodland and caves tucked into the rock that make the whole walk feel like a proper find rather than just a path through fields. Other routes take in rolling grassland and older habitats, with hands-on geological bits along the way for kids who want to actually touch the rock rather than just look at it.

None of this is free, which might surprise you for what's essentially a walk outdoors. Explore Ebbor runs £10, the Glastonbury walk is £8, and if you fancy something different the Torr Works Quarry Tour is £15. Mushroom Meanders is another £10 option if funghi are more your kids' thing than fossils. There's no booking link listed, so you'd want to sort that side out yourself before turning up expecting a guide to be waiting.

It's outdoor space through and through, so the weather does the deciding for you. The hills are described as changeable, especially in winter, and dressing properly matters more here than at most days out. Pushchairs and wheelchairs are catered for on the accessible routes, and there's space for a picnic if you want to make a real morning or afternoon of it.

Dogs are welcome but need to be on a lead or under close control, particularly from March to September when farm animals and wildlife are breeding. If you're bringing the dog along on one of the guided walks, that's the one rule worth knowing before you set off.

Plan your visit

How much do the walks cost?

It depends which one. Explore Ebbor and Mushroom Meanders are £10 each, the Glastonbury walk is £8, and the Torr Works Quarry Tour is £15.

Do we need to book?

There's no booking link listed, so you'd need to sort that separately before you go.

Is it OK for a buggy or wheelchair?

The site lists it as pushchair friendly and wheelchair accessible, so the main routes should manage fine.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs are welcome but need to be on a lead or under close control, especially between March and September when farm animals and wildlife are breeding.

What should we wear?

Dress for anything. The weather on the Mendip Hills is changeable, especially in winter, and it's worth checking a forecast before you head up.
