Caves, Mines & Underground in Bristol

Bristol has a proper knack for tucking something underground into a day out. Giant's Cave, close to the centre, is a steep 130 step descent through a 200-foot tunnel to a platform staring straight at the Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge, tickets from £1.50 and best for ages 4 and up. The bridge itself is free to walk across, with a museum of hidden vaults and a children's trail tucked inside. Out at the Mendip Hills, guided walks lead through limestone gorges and ancient woodland to caves hidden in the landscape, from £8. For toddlers, the free bridge trail or the outdoor Mendip walks are the gentler start, both pushchair friendly. Giant's Cave suits older children happy with steps and a proper tunnel. If you fancy a longer trip, Hopewell Colliery in Coleford has an ex-miner guiding you past real coal being dug and hauled up in carts, ages 4 to 16, booking required, with parking and a cafe on site. Further still, a drive out to Tonypandy gets you a simulated dram ride and a coal owner's parlour to poke around.
