A Welsh Coal Mining Experience
WHERE
Tonypandy
What it’s like
A trip underground-style, with a simulated dram ride, interactive displays and a coal owner's parlour to poke around.
You go down without actually going down. The simulated dram ride takes you back to the surface the way miners would have travelled, which is the bit that sticks with most visitors, and it sets the tone for the rest of the visit rather than being a one-off gimmick stuck at the entrance.
Beyond that there are free digital and interactive displays to work through at your own pace, so you're not being marched round on a fixed timer. You can also sit in the parlour of a rich coal mine owner, which is a sharp contrast to the pit conditions the rest of the exhibits describe, and it's the kind of detail that makes the history land rather than just sitting on a plaque. A traditional shop rounds things off if you want to poke around before you leave.
There's a café on site for a break partway round, and they can take group bookings if you're coming as a school trip or with a larger party. It's a compact, indoor experience rather than a sprawling day out.
