What it’s like
A woodland walk from the car park leads to a ruined castle, with a trail for building your own forest den along the way.
You start in the woods, not at the castle. The walk from the car park takes you through trees with the ruins coming into view as you go, which makes for a better arrival than just pulling up at a gate. Along the way there's a World Builder trail where kids get to build their own forest, so it's not just a march to the main event.
The ruins themselves are the payoff, and by the sound of it worth the walk. There's no age range given, but the woodland approach and a building trail suggest younger children are well catered for alongside older ones who'll want to explore the ruins properly.
It's open daily, 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4:30pm. You don't have to book, but booking online by midnight the day before gets you 15% off, and under-fives go free with an infant ticket if you want one for the records. Turning up on the day works too, you just pay full price.
