What it’s like
Ancient oak woodland with grassy rides to wander and a butterfly trail worth timing for summer.
Free, open all year, and free to get into, this is proper old woodland rather than a manicured park. The grassy rides make easy walking for younger legs, and the ancient oaks give the whole place a different feel from your average patch of trees. There's a butterfly trail too, which is the bit to save for a warm day when there's actually something fluttering about to spot.
Wildlife spotting works whatever the season, though obviously a crisp winter walk and a July afternoon are two very different visits. Dogs are welcome off or on lead depending on what you fancy, and picnics are fine if you want to make a morning of it.
Parking is free and informal, room for around 30 cars, so it can fill up if you catch it at a popular time. There's a height barrier at 6'8" (203cm), which catches out the odd campervan, and it's worth knowing there are no designated accessible parking spaces if that affects your visit.
