What it’s like

Free chalk downland walking with a viewpoint at the top and the South Downs Way running right through it.

This is open grassland and chalk downland, the sort with wildflowers scattered through it rather than a mowed park lawn. The main thing to do is walk, either a short loop or a stretch of the South Downs Way, which cuts straight through the reserve. Push on to the highest point and you get a proper viewpoint, which is the bit worth saving for the end of the walk rather than doing first.

There's nothing built here for kids to climb on or play with, so this suits families who are happy with a wander and some fresh air rather than an afternoon of activities. Older kids who can manage a bit of a walk and don't need entertaining every five minutes will get more out of it than a toddler wanting something to do with their hands. It costs nothing to get in and the parking's free too, in a grove under tall beech trees at the entrance, which is a nice spot in itself.

One thing to know: the northern part of the reserve doesn't have defined trails, so it takes a bit more care to find your way around if you head that way. Sticking to the South Downs Way or the main routes near the entrance is the easier option if you don't fancy working it out as you go.
