What it’s like

A youth group where kids camp, climb, canoe, abseil and cycle their way through badges rather than sitting still for an hour.

This is a scout group, not a one-off activity day, so what your child does changes week to week and season to season. The list of what's on offer is properly outdoorsy: camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling, canoeing, climbing, kayaking, sailing and even skateboarding turn up in the mix. That's a lot of kit and a lot of skill to teach, which tells you this is a group with proper access to the outdoors rather than a hall with a games cupboard.

The age range runs from 6 right up to 25, which covers everything from a Beaver just starting out to a young leader helping run sessions. That's a wide span for one group, and it means the younger ones are mixing with teenagers and young adults who've been through the programme themselves, which is part of the point of scouting rather than a downside.

Don't expect a drop-in session you can turn up to on a whim. Scout groups run on terms and a weekly rhythm, with the more adventurous stuff like abseiling or sailing likely to be occasional trips rather than every meeting. If your child likes being outside and doesn't mind getting mucky, this is the sort of group that keeps finding new things to throw at them.

Plan your visit

What age can my child join?

The group takes children from 6 up to young adults of 25, so there's a route through from Beavers to young leader.

What kind of activities do they actually do?

Camping, hiking and cycling alongside more specialist stuff like abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and climbing. It's a proper outdoor programme rather than a few games in a hall.

Is this a one-off session or a regular thing?

It's a scout group, so it runs as an ongoing thing with regular meetings rather than a single visit.

Do the younger and older kids do things together?

The age range spans 6 to 25, so younger members will be around older teenagers and young adults, including those helping run activities.
