David Yeates shares his life story, from growing up in Ashton-in-Makerfield to discovering his father was a black GI and meeting his family in Atlanta.
David Yeates grew up in 1970s Ashton-in-Makerfield knowing he was different but not knowing why, until he discovered as an adult that he was the son of Steve Belcher, a black GI based at Burtonwood Air Base. In 2002 he travelled to Atlanta to meet his father for the first time, took a DNA test, and was welcomed into his extended African American family. In this talk he shares his life story and his reflections on history and identity, which form the basis of his upcoming memoir. The talk takes place at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery on Saturday 7 November at 4:30pm. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance, and refreshments will be served.
