Southampton's gallery scene is small but easy to get to. Arches Studios is barely any distance from the centre, handy if you're near Woolston or Southampton Central, and it costs nothing to look round the exhibitions and catch a talk. Coastal Gallery is further out, a quieter spot for a weekend browse through contemporary work by local and leading artists, but it only opens its doors on Saturdays and Sundays. If you want something free and flexible, Arches Studios fits round a normal day out and doesn't need planning ahead. If you fancy a slower look at art with more space to yourself, save Coastal Gallery for a weekend when you've time to make the trip and remember it's shut the rest of the week. Neither is a big outing, more a pleasant hour added onto something else.
