What it’s like

Week-long or single-day skate camps in Kensington Gardens teaching kids to rollerblade and skateboard, kit included.

This is skate camp rather than a rink you rock up to. Kids aged 5 to 12 get taught inline skating and skateboarding by instructors with enhanced DBS checks, using a structured programme called Earn Your Stripes, and every child gets a booklet to track what they've learned. Lessons aren't drilled in a fixed order, they mix in slalom, rollersoccer and group games so it doesn't feel like a PE lesson, which is a decent way to keep a seven-year-old's attention for a full week.

You can do rollerblading only, from 10am to 1pm, or add skateboarding and run 10am to 4pm. A single day is £75 for rollerblading alone or £100 for both, and the full 5-day camp jumps to £295 for one discipline or £395 for both, which is a proper commitment if your child decides by Wednesday that skateboarding isn't for them after all. Every day has a beginners' group, so joining midweek isn't a problem if your week's already booked up elsewhere.

All the kit is provided, skates, boards, wrist and knee and elbow protection, helmets, the lot, so there's no need to buy anything before you know if it'll stick. If your child does get into it, they mention free equipment rental only applies to camps, so buying your own kicks in once you're doing private lessons. It all happens at Kensington Gardens, with private lessons also on offer in Battersea and Hyde Park if group sessions aren't the right fit, particularly for kids with more significant learning difficulties, where the site is upfront that a one-to-one is the better route.

Booking is required online in advance, and they mention discounts for signing up early, so this isn't a turn-up-and-see kind of activity. Worth deciding early which combination of days and disciplines you want, since the price difference between rollerblading-only and the full skateboarding package is not small.

How much does it cost?

A single day is £75 for rollerblading or skateboarding alone, or £100 for both. The 5-day camp is £295 for one discipline, £395 for both.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, online pre-registration is required for group sessions. They mention discounts for registering early, so it pays to sort it out sooner rather than later.

What age is this suitable for?

The minimum is 5, and camps are usually capped at 12 though they have taken kids up to 15 depending on the group. If your child has medium to severe learning difficulties, they recommend private lessons instead and ask you to contact them first.

Do we need to bring our own skates or board?

Everything is provided free on camps, including skates, boards, and full protective gear with helmets. If you carry on with private lessons afterwards, buying your own kit is recommended at that point.

Can my child join partway through the week?

Mid or end-of-week joiners are welcome and every day includes a session for beginners.
