What it’s like

Hire your own boat by the hour or the day and steer it up the Broads yourselves, dogs welcome aboard.

You take the wheel here, not the other way round. These are self-drive day boats out onto the Norfolk Broads, no skipper needed, and you can hire by the hour or take one for the whole day if you want to properly potter. The self-drive launches hold 6 to 12 people, so it works for one family or two squeezed onto the same boat, and there's duck food to buy on arrival for the bit by the bridge before you even set off.

If you fancy making a day of it, the picnic boats seat up to 9 and come with a two-ring burner, a kettle and a toilet on board, which turns lunch into something you cook mid-river rather than something you packed cold in a bag. That's the detail worth planning around: a flask of tea made on the water beats one from a thermos every time.

You'll find the entrance beside the bridge at Wroxham, tucked right behind Ken's Chip shop, and parking in the town is free. The train station's a short walk from the collection point too. Booking online is recommended, and they'll happily take up to two well-behaved dogs on board with you for free.
