What it’s like

Flying displays of birds of prey plus hands-on owl and hawk walks, open Thursday to Sunday.

The main event is the flying display, birds of prey swooping low enough that a four-year-old will duck. Beyond watching, there's a Birds of Prey Experience where you actually get to handle and interact with the birds, and separate owl walks and hawk walks if you want more time with a particular species. There's also a play area for the younger ones who haven't got the patience for a full display.

It's only open Thursday to Sunday, which is a bit of a faff if you fancy a spontaneous Tuesday out, though they do open on Mondays during school holidays. Hours run 10am to 4.30pm, so you're not squeezing in a late afternoon visit. The site reckons a few hours covers a typical trip, but there's a full day experience if you want to make more of it, particularly if you're doing one of the walks on top of the display.

Prices sting a bit for a family day out. It's £14.50 for anyone over 12, £8.50 for under-12s and free under 3, or £42 for a family ticket covering two adults and two kids. There's a season ticket too, which throws in free entry to all their special events for a year, worth thinking about if you reckon you'll be back.

The Cabin Cafe does freshly-cooked lunches alongside the usual tea, coffee and cake. It's an outdoor site, so a dry day makes the flying displays a lot more fun to stand and watch.
