WHERE

Broxbourne

What it’s like

Over 30 animatronic dinosaurs to walk among, plus a train ride, crazy golf and soft play if the rain sets in.

The big draw here is walking round life-size animatronic dinosaurs, more than 30 of them dotted through landscaped grounds. Little ones who are into their T-Rex facts will be in heaven, and the Rex Express train ride through the dinosaur landscape is worth saving for the point when small legs start flagging. There's Dinosaur Adventure Golf too, which is a nice way to burn an hour without it feeling like "just another walk".

Paths are tarmac throughout with benches along the way, so pushchairs and wheelchairs get round fine, though the site itself says wheelchair and mobility scooter hire is limited and best booked ahead. Tumble Jungle soft play is your backup if the weather turns, and Boulders Beach water feature is a good one for summer, though it shuts for winter so don't build a whole visit around it.

It's open 9:30am to 5:30pm from April to September and 9:30am to 4:30pm the rest of the year, closed only on Christmas Day. Last entry for non-members is 4pm in summer and 3pm in winter, so don't turn up at half three in July expecting to get in. One genuine faff: it's a cashless site, so leave the cash at home and bring a card.

Parking is free across four car parks, though the main one fills first and you'll get sent to the overflow across the road on a busy day. If you're coming by train, Broxbourne station is about ten minutes away, but public transport doesn't reach the zoo directly, so you'll want a taxi booked for the way back rather than hoping one turns up.

Plan your visit

How much is it and do we need to book?

Tickets can be shown on a phone or tablet if you book online. There's a 20% Blue Light Card discount on day tickets at the gate for the cardholder only.

What time does it open and close?

9:30am to 5:30pm April to September, 9:30am to 4:30pm October to March. Closed Christmas Day, open pretty much every other day of the year.

When's last entry?

4pm in summer and 3pm in winter for non-members, so aim to arrive well before that if you want a proper look round.

Is there parking?

Free parking across four car parks. The main one fills first, then you're pointed to the overflow across the road.

Can we get there by train?

Broxbourne station is about ten minutes away by car or taxi. There's no direct public transport to the zoo, so book a taxi for the return leg rather than assume you'll flag one down.

Is it buggy and wheelchair friendly?

Yes, tarmac paths throughout with benches to rest on. Wheelchair and mobility scooter hire is available but limited, so it's best pre-booked.

Can we hire a pushchair or wheelchair there?

Single stroller hire is £10 a day, double £14, wheelchair £10 and mobility scooters £25, all with a returnable deposit. Scooters are for over 18s only.

Is Boulders Beach open all year?

It only runs in summer, 10am to 5pm from April to September. It's shut over winter.

Can we pay by cash?

It's a cashless site, so bring a card rather than cash.

Do Blue Peter badges get free entry?

Children with a valid Blue Peter Photo ID Card get in free alongside a full paying adult, as long as that adult's ticket was bought online in advance.
