What it’s like
Free rides on a working miniature railway, open Sunday afternoons from April to September.
The main event here is a ride behind a proper little steam or diesel locomotive, built small enough for a child to sit on but real enough that it actually pulls them round the track. There's no fence to watch from, you queue up and get on. Given that it's free entry, that's a decent afternoon for the price of whatever you spend in the café.
The catch is the window. It only runs Sunday afternoons, 1pm to 4pm, and only from April to the end of September. Miss that three hours and there's nothing to see, so it's worth building the rest of your Sunday around it rather than squeezing it in as an afterthought. There's no booking mentioned.
The café runs the same hours and keeps it simple: hot dogs, burgers, chips, a chip butty if you want to go full trackside, plus tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Prices are low, £3.50 for a burger, £1 for a Yorkshire Tea.
If you've got a train-mad child with a birthday coming up, the party offer is hard to beat for the money: unlimited rides for 25 guests plus a gazebo, two tables, cloths and chairs, all on a Sunday in season. It saves you hauling your own gazebo out of the shed, which is no small thing.
