Abbeydale Miniature Railway
ENTRY
Free
WHERE
Sheffield
What it’s like
A steam-hauled miniature railway where a train ride costs just £2 and entry itself is free.
The whole point here is the trains: proper little steam locomotives on a 7¼ inch gauge track, pulling carriages full of kids who think they're driving the thing. A ride is £2, which is about as cheap as a day out gets, and getting through the gate costs nothing at all.
It only runs on the dates shown on their timetable, so this isn't a turn-up-any-Saturday sort of place, you'll want to check when it's actually open before you plan around it. There's a Lottery-funded carriage that means most wheelchair users can get on and ride too, which is a nice touch for a volunteer-run line. Ball games, throwing games and barbecues aren't allowed on site, so it's really about the trains rather than a picnic-and-football kind of visit.
Parking is free in a field next door, but it's at your own risk and depends on the weather, so after a wet week you might be better off on foot or bus. Buses 97, 98 and 218 stop near the entrance on Abbeydale Road South, and Dore and Totley station is about 200 metres away if you fancy arriving by train to catch a train. Dogs are welcome on a short lead, though they have to stay off the carriages themselves.
If you're thinking about a birthday party, the details for that are on the timetable page rather than something you book over the phone. Groups aren't currently being taken on, so this one's really for families turning up rather than school trips or clubs.
