What it’s like

A guided walk into sea caves to see Pictish carvings over a thousand years old, plus the ruins of Macduff Castle.

This one's not a turn-up-and-explore kind of visit. You go with a guide, and the point of it is the carvings: Pictish symbols and early Christian crosses cut into the cave walls over a thousand years ago. There's a museum bit too, and the ruins of Macduff Castle sit along the route, so it's history stacked on history rather than one single thing to look at.

The full tour covers a mile of coastal ground, and the site is honest that it's uneven with a fair few steps, so trainers won't really cut it and you'll want proper footwear. If a full mile sounds like too much for smaller legs or a bad hip, they can arrange a shorter tour in advance, or you can just do Court Cave and Doo Cave, or Macduff Castle to Jonathan's Cave, instead of the whole lot. Some gated areas are currently closed because of damage to the site, which is worth knowing before you build your day around seeing everything.

Entry's free, which is rare for something this specific, but the tradeoff is you have to book ahead. Sunday tours run year round, and outside of that it depends on a volunteer being free, so email a few days before rather than hoping to wing it. Budget up to two hours if you're doing the longer route.

  • Book by email rather than expecting to just show up, especially outside Sundays
  • You can do a shorter route like Court Cave and Doo Cave instead of the full mile

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

It's free. You do need to book a guided tour though, nothing here is self-guided.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, booking is essential. Sundays run year-round, other days depend on a volunteer being available, so email tours@wemysscaves.org a few days ahead.

How long does a visit take?

Up to two hours for the full tour, which runs a mile along the coast. Shorter routes like Court Cave and Doo Cave take less time.

Is it manageable if someone in the group has mobility difficulties?

The coastal ground is uneven with a lot of steps, so the full mile-long tour is tough going. A shorter tour can be arranged in advance if that's a problem.

Can we visit as a group?

Organised tour groups can get access to the caves and the visitor centre facilities by contacting info@wemysscaves.org.
